60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Phoenix 2ed Including Tempe, Scottsdale, and Glendale
Charles Liu

Hiking is perhaps the perfect outdoor activity, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Highlighting the unique geography of metropolitan Phoenix and surrounding areas, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Phoenix introduces readers to some of the best hiking trails in Arizona. Arguably the Southwest's premier city, Phoenix offers its four million residents a mind-boggling array of hiking destinations, from the three major mountain preserves to area parks, greenbelts, and preserves.

All roughly within an hour's drive of the Valley of the Sun, the trails highlighted in this updated edition begin right inside the city limits with the likes of popular Camelback Mountain. From Hidden Valley to the south to the Superstition Wilderness to the north, author Charles Liu leads hikers and walkers along a superb collection of diverse trails. Newbies and seasoned veterans will all find a worthwhile hike and discover that the book is merely a beginning to the endless possibilities of hiking experiences in central Arizona.

IMPORTANT UPDATES

Hike #47: Tonto Narrows: WARNING: As of early 2009, the trailhead for this hike is closed to public access due to recent conflicts between hikers and local ranchers. There are currently no established alternate access routes to Tonto Creek from the town of Gisela.

Hike #22: Tom's Thumb: As of early 2009, construction for a new trailhead began approximately 0.5 miles to the east on 130th St. (instead of 126th St.) south of Paraiso Dr. The trail to Tom's Thumb has been rerouted to the new trailhead. The good news is that you no longer need a high-clearance vehicle, and the trail has been much improved to the point where it is now only a moderate hike without the need for route-finding. However, the length of the hike has been extended to 4 miles round-trip.

Hike #32: Picketpost Mountain: As of early 2009, a new segment of the Arizona Trail was constructed adjacent to the old Jeep road. The first 0.4 miles of this hike now follows the new Arizona Trail through Sonoran desert foothills. When the trail intersects a small dirt road near the base of Picketpost Mountain, turn left onto the dirt road to begin your ascent.
