The Best in Tent Camping: New York State
Wilderness abounds in New York State. From the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, from the Adirondack Mountains to the Catskills, from the St. Lawrence River to the Hudson, tent campers wishing to explore the state have a wide variety of campgrounds from which to choose.
Best in Tent Camping: New York
highlights the 50 best. Eschewing the noisy, the busy, the overbooked and the badly maintained, the authors have chosen peaceful and scenic campgrounds by lakes, on islands, near beaches, along rivers and deep in the woods.
Divided geographically into seven sections Ñ Long Island, Catskills/Hudson Valley, Central/Leatherstocking, Adirondacks, St. Lawrence River, Finger Lakes, and Western Ñ the book is a helpful reference for camping enthusiasts throughout the state. And highlighting activities, hiking trails, and local attractions, it will also serve as inspiration when planning a trip. Historical tidbits, descriptions of wildlife and the occasional personal anecdote add flavor to the campground descriptions. Star ratings and maps make choosing the best place to pitch a tent a simple task. So grab your tent and get packing.
About Aaron Starmer, Catharine Wells, and Timothy Starmer
Catharine Wells was born on Cape Cod, and her parents’ many moves throughout the Northeast inspired her lifelong wanderlust. She pitched her first tent as a Girl Scout in Penn’s Woods. Backpacking trips during college took her as far as Australia, Thailand, and Costa Rica. Her favorite camping spots are usually near the water, such as Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico and Watch Hill on Fire Island. Currently a book editor in New York City, Cate often loads up her pack and escapes into the wilderness on weekends. She always makes sure her first-aid kit contains heaps of bandages, plenty of sunscreen, and a corkscrew for emergencies.
Growing up outside of Syracuse, Aaron Starmer spent his childhood exploring the wilds of central New York. As a graduation present from Drew University, he received a tent, which has become his favorite accommodation on trips around the country. He has pitched it on the rim of the Grand Canyon, in the shadow of the Watchman at Zion National Park, deep in the woods of the Great Smoky Mountains, and on Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico. For years he has worked in New York City as an editor for Longitude Books, a bookseller specializing in recommended reading for travelers. His writing has appeared in McSweeney’s and other humor publications. Currently a resident of Hoboken, New Jersey, he hopes to write, travel, and pitch that tent more with each coming year.
Tim Starmer has always been an outdoor enthusiast and spent most of his childhood seeking out remote and wild areas whenever possible. During a brief hiatus from Brown University during 1997, he drove across the United States for six weeks, camping the entire way. Along the way he explored many of the West’s national and state parks, including Canyonlands, Yellowstone, Arches, Bryce Canyon—he even braved pitching a tent among the mosquito swarms in Badlands National Park. At the trip’s conclusion, he headed down to Australia, where he backpacked for a few months exploring the eastern Outback, the Great Barrier Reef, and the caves of Tasmania, as well as traversing the Tasmanian World Heritage Area along the Overland Track. Tim currently works in upstate New York as a timber framer and can still be found exploring the wilds whenever possible
