Your Car-Camping Guide to Scenic Beauty, the Sounds of Nature, and an Escape from Civilization

This book is for campers who enjoy getting outdoors because they like the experience of being outdoors—the quiet of an evening in the woods, the sound of nearby water, a schedule set by the sun not a clock. While no one can predict ungracious neighbors, all 50 campgrounds listed here were chosen because they held the most promise for that outdoorexperience. I’ve tried to anticipate as many different ways to enjoy tent camping as possible. State Park campgrounds offer the most amenities, but are also more visited than State Forest and National Forest campgrounds. Michigan’s National Forest campgrounds often have flush toilets, a big plus when camping with kids. Every campground in the book, as most campgrounds in the state, is found next to a river or lake. And I’ve tried to mention the best places for fishing and paddling, hiking and biking in each area.

If you’ve ever crawled into your tent at night and laid there, wide awake, listening the boom of a portable stereo two sites over and the drone of a nearby generator, all the while illuminated by 10,000 watts of artificial light pouring through the thin fabric of your shelter, you will want to plan your next trip with The Best in Tent Camping – Michigan.

About Matt Forster
As a native of Michigan, Matt Forster has camped all over the Great Lake State. He's carried his gear in backpacks, Duluth packs, saddle bags, and car trunks, and slept in tents, pop-ups, camper vans, and RVs. He and his wife live in Michigan with their two young children, who are both just experiencing camping for the first time. These days, camping trips often come down to tossing the tent in the back of the car, loading up way too much equipment, and praying for good weather (a necessity with a toddler in tow).

As a freelance writer, he's the author of Backroads & Byways of Michigan (The Countryman Press), Colorado: An Explorer's Guide (The Countryman Press), and a travel app for Michigan's Grand Traverse region called Up North! Grand Traverse.
