Canoeing & Kayaking Guide to West Virginia, 5ed

Though it sports a new name and look, A Canoeing & Kayaking Guide to West Virginia (formerly Wildwater West Virginia) is still the definitive guide to whitewater in the Mountain State. Thirty years after the initial printing, this book continues to bring paddlers the best of West Virginia's waters: from classics rivers, such as the Gauley, the New, and the Tygart, to steep creeks like North Fork of Blackwater and Meadow River. At-a-glance information for each river section helps boaters pick rivers to match their ability and current weather conditions, while river descriptions, gauge and shuttle route information provide additional critical information.

Whether boating in kayaks, canoes, or sit-on-tops, paddlers will find more than enough rivers to fit their interest or skill level. In addition, literary interludes scattered throughout each book will invoke the spirit of paddling, encouraging readers' contemplation of past and future trips. Appendices include websites, gauge information, and safety information, making this book a valuable resource in planning out the next trip. From meandering riffled streams to on-the-edge, in-your-face steep creeks, these guides contains the best each state has to offer. For the past 30 years, dog-eared copies of Wildwater West Virginia have found permanent homes in the glove boxes and bookshelves of serious whitewater paddlers.

While this classic guide now sports a new look and a new title, you'll find the same high-caliber advice that thousands of paddlers have relied on while paddling the streams and rivers of the Mountain State. Inside are updated descriptions of all the classic rivers, including the Gauley, the New, and the Meadow, as well as exciting new reports of today's steep creek runs. Each river description highlights critical information about difficulty, steepness, and scenery, as well as vital gauge and shuttle information. Whether you're an experienced paddler or are just starting out, you'll want to grab a copy or two of A Canoeing & Kayaking Guide to West Virginia - the definitive guide to whitewater in West Virginia.

Day and Overnight Hikes: Tonto National Forest (with pdf bundle)
Tony Padegimas

*This is a special bundled digital edition of this book. Buy the book at full price and get instant access to a downloadable pdf version. So it's two copies for the price of one!*

The Tonto National Forest in central Arizona is one of the largest (2.8 million acres) and most popular (approximately 6 million visitors a year) forests in the United States. Within this territory, visitors find six separate ecosystems from Sonoran desert lowlands around Phoenix to pine forested mountain peaks, all part of the convoluted topography that left this area one of the last in the west to be truly settled. Parts of it are specifically unsettled, for the Tonto includes eight designated wilderness areas including one of the largest in the country (Mazazatl Wilderness) and one of the most popular (Superstition Wilderness).

Much of what is really worth discovering in the Tonto National Forest can only be reached by foot. Wilderness boundaries and the sheer ruggedness of the terrain mandate that visitors get out of the car and lace up their boots to explore the numerous high peaks, deep gorges, babbling river beds, near silent deserts, hundred year old mining camps and thousand year old native American settlements scattered widely across this vast national forest. Winding through all of these rugged wonders are more than 900 miles of trails.

This guide follows the best of them, representing each of the Tonto’s unique areas. Some are well known, such as the Highline trail, which winds across the 2000’ escarpment of the Mogollon rim for 79 miles, or the Lost Dutchman trail through the wild and weird Superstition Mountains. Some are known only by numbers, or faint lines on old maps. While the Highline Trail offers panoramic vistas of the entire Tonto Basin, Jacob’s Crosscut Trail offers a vista of metropolitan Phoenix. Other hiking trails tunnel through thick brush or squeeze through claustrophobic slot canyons.

Many of these trails are as obvious as sidewalks, but a few are trace routes marked only by instinct and an occasional pile of rocks. Whether you’re looking for an easy hike to show your relatives from back east what real cactus looks like, or an epic journey through the backcountry that will test your feet and your nerves, this guide can tell you where to start, and what to expect. So grab your hiking boots and get out on the trail.

Alaska Adventure Guide

Alaska Adventure Guide
Melissa DeVaughn

The author has worked to answer all your questions about travel and recreation in a state so remote. This guide attempts to target your interests and save you time, money, and effort so that nothing is wasted during your trip. Because Alaska is so big and your options so varied, the guide is organized so you can zero in on the activity or activities that appeal to you most. Thirteen chapters focus solely on adventure travel, each devoted to a single activity.

The five regional chapters that follow focus primarily on the basics in a given area of the state: getting around, shopping, lodging, dining, and entertainment. Once you’ve chosen the adventure of your dreams, you can go to the appropriate regional chapter to get the scoop on the best places in the vicinity to stay, eat, buy gear, rent a car, and learn about local culture and history. Outdoor travelers also are likely independent travelers. A multitude of companies offer exciting-sounding jaunts to scenic places all over the state, but many of these outfits work only with tour providers, such as cruise-ship operators, to obtain large numbers of clients per trip—thus excluding people who wish to travel on their own.

In this guide, all our listings are available to independent travelers as well as those in tour groups. The objective is not to provide the most information about destinations or attractions, but, rather, the most useful information. The guide is opinionated, and for good reason. Any destination or outfitter listed here has made the cut by proving itself a wonderful place to visit or a reliable company with which to do business. If, for example, you want to learn more about sea kayaking in Alaska, you will not be supplied with every operation in the business—and believe us, there are many of them competing for your dollars. What you will get is a select assortment of those we consider best, and why. After all, isn’t the point of a guidebook to help you make the most informed choices?
